Adam Puchta Winery
The Adam Puchta winery, located just southwest of Hermann, boast the title of, “the oldest family farm winery in Missouri.” What’s even more amazing lies in the fact that the winery has been owned by the same family continuously since its founding in 1855.
Adam Puchta’s family emigrated from Germany to Hermann and settled on a 40-acre plot of land and built a one-room log cabin complete with a small wine cellar on premises. Adam’s father of seven bought the land in 1841 and purchased 40 additional acres in 1849, and houses the winery’s current location.
After leaving the family farm in 1853 with his brother in search of gold, Adam returned to Hermann in 1855 and purchased 40 acres from his father and to start his own farm and vineyard. That same year he created his first batch of wine from a mixture of wild grapes and grapes grown from his father’s vineyard.
Adam’s winery eventually grew from a small operation in the cellar under his house into a business that currently that has the capacity to make 62,000 gallons of wine. Visitors today can taste a variety of wines, from Chardonel to Vignoles. Because of Adam’s unwavering determination and uniquely delicious wine, his winery has become a notable staple in the Missouri.
